Estimates indicate that there are about 2 billion people worldwide consuming alcoholic beverages and 76.3 million with diagnosed alcohol use disorders, resulting in a significant public health burden. Globally, alcohol consumption causes 3.2 per cent of deaths (1.8 million) and 4 per cent of Disability-Adjusted Life Years lost (58.3 million); and overall, there are causal relationships between alcohol consumption and more than 60 types of disease and injury. This report examines current alcohol policy measures and strategies, adopted by governments throughout the world, designed to control supply and demand, minimise alcohol-related harm and promote public health. It seeks to provide an objective baseline with which to monitor current trends and to build effective policies, in order to address the social and public health problems associated with alcohol consumption.
