A discussion of ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) in adulthood. Leading authorities on the disorder provide family physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other health care professionals with a practical approach for diagnosing and treating ADHD in their adult patients. The book begins with an account of how ADHD manifests itself in adult life. In general, hyperactivity tends to diminish with age, impulsivity changes quality, and attention problems remain the same but become more disabling as organizational demands increase. The authors then answer typical questions posed by professionals and adults with ADHD. They describe the diagnostic overview and the use of rating scales, including the DSM-IV's diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Because ADHD is often associated with other psychiatric disorders, including depression, bipolar disease, anxiety disorders and substance abuse, the authors also discuss co-existing disorders. The three approaches to treatment - medication, psychological therapies, and environmental restructuring at home - are thoroughly covered.
Because ADHD is both an adult and a paediatric disorder and is frequently found in more than one family member, the authors also discuss ADHD's impact on the family and include the story of one family in which the mother and oldest son both have attention disorders. The text ends with speculations on directions the field may take and suggestions for future research.
