This book summarizes some of the most important advances in pregnancy-related protein research during the last 25 years. The term pregnancy-related proteins in this context means proteins which are synthesized during pregnancy by the mother, foetus or foetal-placental unit and which seem to play a role in the foetal and placental development and in the maintenance of pregnancy. Most of the pregnancy-related proteins described in this book are synthesized in the placenta. The placenta contains almost every class of mammalian enzyme that is found in most of the common metabolic pathways. The authors include coverage of replacement therapy of enzymes isolated from human placentas in patients who suffer from a deficiency of the corresponding enzyme. They include coverage of detection and determination by specific immunochemical methods of pregnancy-related proteins which appear in maternal blood, urine or amniotic fluid which can be used for the early diagnosis of pregnancy or to diagnose the assessment of placental function and foetal well-being. Tumour-associated proteins are examined which are valuable as tumour markers in trophoblastic and non-trophoblastic human cancers.
Conditioned medium prepared from human placentas have also been used for the preparation of biological active proteins for clinical applications. The availability of recombinant DNA techniques now open the possibility to produce such proteins in almost unlimited quantities and uncovers new therapeutic applications.
