In the second edition of this best-selling practical text, Neil Gopee and Jo Galloway focus squarely on the essential leadership and management skills that newly-qualified health and social care professionals need to develop early on in their careers. Drawing on the most up-to-date policies and professional regulations, and with an emphasis on the provision of person-centred care, the authors - both of whom have backgrounds in clinical practice, education and management - show how these skills can be applied across a range of situations in everyday practice. Chapters recognise the challenges facing newly-qualified health and social care professionals, and cover, for example: - The effective organisation of day to day health and social care - Managing resources - Decision-making skills - Managing and leading change - Supporting the development of colleagues - Patient/service user involvement Theory is related clearly to practice through a range of case studies, while action points and good-practice guidelines challenge the reader to apply the knowledge they have learned from working through the chapters to their own personal experiences. The book will be ideal for all nursing, allied health and social care students, as well as professionals who need a clear guide to contemporary policies, theories and skills needed for effective practice.

An excellent combination of theoretical concepts, pulling together the core principles of management and leadership in healthcare and packed with introspective activities. It will engage the reader to develop innovative ideas which are transferable to real life situations. -- Vinoda P. Coopamah This book recognises the notion of leadership at all levels. Much of the current leadership material focuses on senior management so having something that applies to more junior staff in practice is helpful. -- Dr Jane Parker

Author Biography:

Neil Gopee is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Coventry University, and has until recently also been Associate Lecturer at the Open University. Neil's role as external examiner at various higher education institutions has further broadened his insights into the two subject areas that he teaches and researchs: first, learning, teaching and assessment in relation to undergraduate and postgraduate students; and, second, management and leadership in healthcare settings. Neil: I first qualified as a nurse a few decades ago and worked in general surgical nursing for a year before moving on to complete the registered mental health nurse course. Through my nursing career, a combination of clinical experiences in primary care and general intensive care nursing was also supplemented by attendance at numerous professional development short and long courses, including various workshops on writing for publication, and also completing my doctorate in continuing professional education at University of Warwick. My first peer-reviewed article was published in 1991 based on my then nurse tutor role. The 1990s were when nurse education programmes became a part of university provision, which further opened up authoring opportunities, and I negotiated with Alison Poyner, Commissioning Editor at SAGE Publications, to write the Mentoring and Supervision in Healthcare book, the first edition of which was published in 2007. Along the way, I also worked with SAGE Publications to write Leadership and Management in Healthcare (now in its second edition) and Practice Teaching in Healthcare textbooks. I have also had chapters published in edited books and a range of peer-reviewed articles.
