Description:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. Clinically referred preschool children with ADHD are significantly impaired, are at-risk for poor school outcome, and are frequent users of the healthcare system. Behavior problems in preschool children with ADHD persist to school-age years resulting in considerable stress for the entire family and staggering socio-economic burden to schools and society at large. This book provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding assessment-including diagnostic interview, neuropsychological testing, comorbidity and differential diagnosis, sleep problems-and treatment interventions including psychosocial, pharmacological and complementary and alternative treatments. All the chapters have a clinical focus and practical case examples are used to increase competency in clinical settings. ADHD in Preschool Children serves as a guide for experienced practitioners of child and adolescent mental health care as well as trainees in child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, social work, pediatrics, family medicine and nursing. The chapter authors are national leaders with significant experience in assessing and treating preschool children with ADHD and behavioral disorders.

Review:

"This book is wise, eminently readable, and a valuable resource for anyone working with young children -- parents, educators, and counselors. It spells out the challenges in identifying young children with ADHD while providing expert guidance in how to assess and treat these children. A powerful addition to the literature, the book provides an understandable integration of psychopathology, assessment, and treatment strategies." -- Paramjit T. Joshi, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences &amp Pediatrics, George Washington University School of Medicine and President-Elect, AACAP"This exceptional book, full of compelling clinical wisdom and thoughtful integration of relevant research, provides a much-needed and authoritative resource for the rapidly growing field of ADHD in preschool children. Written by outstanding experts in their respective fields, the chapters are clear, informative, and comprehensive and cover every important aspect of assessment and treatment. ADHD in Preschool Children: Assessment and Treatment will be a welcome addition to the personal libraries of students new to the field and experts in need of a definitive resource." -- Mark Riddle, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine"ADHD in Preschool Children: Assessment and Treatment is a well-written, timely book that will help pediatric, mental health, and primary care practitioners provide quality care for families who have young children with ADHD. Drs. Jaswinder and Harinder Ghuman address the sometimes confusing and often controversial issues about how and when to identify and treat ADHD in preschool children. The chapters offer a thoughtful approach to developing rapport with parents and child, reviewing best practices for diagnosis, and helping families examine treatment options, both mainstream and alternative." -- Alice Charach, MD, Associate Professor
